Por Pia Phak. Deep fried vegetable spring rolls served with sweet chili dipping sauce, P150. |
We had dinner there just three weeks after I came back from a month-long food trip to Thailand, so I was fully prepared to hate everything. I was pleasantly surprised.
Peekgai Thod. Thai deep fried chicken wings served with sweet chili dipping sauce and sticky rice, P250. |
Kaopad Goong. Stir fried rice with shrimps, P250. |
A little anemic and not as fiery as "real" Thai food in Thailand, of course. But better than a lot of crap masquerading as Thai cuisine in Manila.
Khao Kook Kapi. Stir fried rice with shrimp paste, P230. |
Teak Jim Jaew. Marinated grilled tenderloin of beef served with Northeastern Thai dipping sauce, P550. |
Our bill was disconcertingly high, though. Especially since I had gotten used to 70-baht meals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Perhaps it can't be helped: In Manila, good food doesn't come cheap anymore.
Tub Tim Grob. Red ruby chestnut in coconut milk and crushed ice, P150. |
I have to admit that presentation-wise, Mango Tree Bistro gets top marks. Looking at these photos makes me want to go back. It'll cost me a pretty penny, but at least I know that I won't be (too) disappointed/sad/frustated/angry. And it's cheaper than flying to Bangkok.
