cake porn @ dulcelise

Enter Dulcelise.

It's a cool little refuge from Vigan's unrelenting summer heat and the only place to get a decent dessert in town.

Recommended by @Wikireena: the Molten Choco Lava Cake, Php85.

The center wasn't molten enough, but overall it was quite nice. Very chocolatey, and the generous scoop of vanilla ice cream was much appreciated on a sweltering day. Actually, it was way too hot to be eating warm cake. I'm sure I would have enjoyed this more in December or January. Now that I think about it, this dessert reminded me of a hug-- too sticky and sweaty for this time of the year. Comforting, nonetheless.

Mr. DJ insisted on the Reese's Peanut Butter Cheesecake, Php110.

Reese's fans, rejoice! A crumbly dense cake that was mostly peanut butter. I would have wanted more cheesiness, but to be fair, it was not as cloyingly sweet as I feared it would be. The chopped up Reese's Peanut Butter Cups could have been in smaller pieces and sprinkled throughout the cake more evenly, though.

My favorite was the Peanut Butter Cream Pie, can't remember the price. It wasn't on the menu.

The chocolate cookie crust and syrup drizzled on top provided just the right bittersweet cocoa notes, while the peanut butter essence was very distinct in the filling. If the Reese's cake was akin to eating peanut butter out of a jar, then this pie was like eating a soft and smooth peanut butter flavored cloud. A dessert that required minimal chewing to enjoy. Perfect for days when you don't feel like exerting any effort at all, even to eat.

Verdict: Of course, one should not compare Dulcelise Dessert Bar to a patisserie in Manila. To say that it is not as good would be unfair. But to say that it's good enough, considering its location, would be patronizing. However, both statements are true, politically-incorrect they may be.

I like Dulcelise. I would definitely go back and try the Lemon Torte next time I'm in Vigan. OK, maybe there's really no choice since there's no place like it in the whole province, but here's another true statement: Dulcelise's cakes are delicious. If homemade goodness is what you're looking for, you'll find it here.

They just need to get rid of the handwritten labels Scotch-taped to the display case.

Dulcelise Dessert Bar is located beside the Vigan Plaza Hotel, along Mena Crisologo Street, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. They're open from 11AM to 11PM daily.
